A pneumatic atomiser for atomising sample liquids in atomic absorption spectroscopy comprises an atomising nozzle (26), to generate a spray mist of sample liquid and pressure gas, and a deflector body (40) disposed in front of the atomising nozzle (26). The distance of the deflector body (40) from the atomising nozzle (26) is adjustable. As a result, the proportion of fine droplets in the sample liquid mist can be adjusted optimally, and thus an optimum sensitivity and detection limit of the instrument can be achieved. The deflector body (40) can optionally swing away laterally from the atomising nozzle (26). In addition, a particularly advantageous constructional solution is described for the mounting of the deflector body (40). <IMAGE>
