PURPOSE:To provide a water heater of counterflow directly contacting type of high heating efficiency, of which temperature to heat water can easily be controlled from the heated side, by injecting a heating fluid into a flow path of water so as to cross the running water. CONSTITUTION:A heating tube 6 has a number of breather pores 4 to inject steam on the outer surface of a tube and around it. A tube cover 5, of which diameter is larger than that of the heating tube 6, is to feed water to the outer side of a heating tube 6. When steam is fed to the heating tube 6 through a steam pipe 7, the steam is injected to the tube cover 5 through the vents 4. The flow of water and the flow of steam injected from the vents 4 are crossed to each other, the water and the steam directly contacting with each other, and the temperature in the water (W) is increased gradually from low to high as it is flowing to the direction of the end of a tube cover 5, hot water (H) is made up. The hot water is collected in the outer side of a tube cover 5, and is discharged from a hot water tube 1. By controlling valves V1 and V2 to change the feeding rate of water from a water pipe 1, the temperature of the hot water can be changed arbitrarily.
