PURPOSE:To execute the format writing with high efficiency by having the dynamic reference to a table storing the control information on the erasing action carried out after a format writing job in a format writing mode and omitting the undesired erasing actions among those erasing actions carried out every time a format writing job is through. CONSTITUTION:A segment table 20 transfers a segment number 63 corresponding to an input address signal 60 to a disk controller 12. The controller 12 compares the segment number with which both format writing and erasing jobs are carried out previously with the segment number of this time in order to decide whether an erasing action is needed or not after the format writing job. If the input segment number is larger than that written previously, i.e., an erasing action is already carried out in the corresponding area, a fact that an erasing action is not needed is informed to a disk device 13a.
