PURPOSE:To separate dialdehyde useful as an immobilization agent for proteins and enzymes, disinfectant, polymer crosslinking agent, etc., from an aqueous solution of sulfolane containing 8-12C dialdehyde, by extracting the dialdehyde with a saturated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon such as cyclohexane, etc., under heating. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution of sulfolane containing the dialdehyde of formula I (E<1> and E<2> are independently ethylene or ethylidene; m is 2-6) (e.g., 1,8-octanedial, 2-methyl-1,7-heptanedial, 2,5-dimethyl-1,6-hexanedial, etc.) is extracted with a 5-7C saturated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon (e.g. cyclopen tane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, etc.) at >=40 deg.C, preferably 40-110 deg.C, especially 50-100 deg.C to separate the objective dialdehyde. The above process can be applied to the reaction mixture obtained by the hydroformylation of the alpha,omega-diolefin of formula II or alpha,omega-dialdehyde of formula III in the presence of a hydroformylation catalyst.
