ELECTRIC FIELD CONTROL TYPE LIGHT GUIDE LENS

PURPOSE:To facilitate the manufacture of a lens and to reset a lens function upon occasion by providing electrodes which produce an electric field parallel to the surface of a light guide surface and perpendicular to the propagation direction of light. CONSTITUTION:The light guide layer 2 which has electrooptic effect is provided on a substrate 1 and a couple of electrodes 3 for the formation of a light guide lens are formed thereupon curvedly across an optical path. Then when a voltage is applied to the electrodes, the electric field is established in parallel to the surface of the light guide and at right angles to the propagation direction of the light. The light is polarized by the refractive index distribution based upon the electric field and focused on a point P, thereby forming the lens. Consequently, the electrodes 3 are only formed, so the manufacture of the lens is facilitated and the lens function is reset by stopping the application of the voltage.
