PURPOSE:To improve the processing efficiency of the system by defining a virtual device address not existing physically and using the address to apply interruption timing notice to a host device and support of a display command of state information. CONSTITUTION:The automatic library system is equipped with devices 4(0)-4(n) mounting a recording medium stored in a storage shelf and recording/ reproducing data, an accessor device 3 carrying a recording medium, and controllers 1,2 controlling them. The vitual device address 5 not physically existing and notifying the timing command and state information display to the devices 4(0)-4(n) and the device 3 is provided to the system. The notice of the timing de to generation of interruption at a device number of the address 5 to hosts A-C of the host device and the support of the display command of the state information due to the start to the start to the device number of the address 5 are applied. Then required interruption/state information display is applied instantly without being affected by the length of the processing time of the device 3.
