PURPOSE:To attain high speed background pattern display by forming a pattern display data as a character string or an escape sequence and sending not all but only a command of a background pattern display request. CONSTITUTION:An auxiliary storage means 6 storing a background pattern data is provided in a display device 2 in advance. Then a host computer 1 generates a pattern data and sends it to the display device 2 together with the escape sequence. When the display device 2 receives the pattern data and the escape sequence from a host computer 1, the device 2 decodes them and stores each data such as a code, a function and a field to each background pattern file in the means 6 according to the decoding. When the display designation of the background file is given to the display device 2, the background pattern data stored in the said auxiliary storage means 6 is transferred to a refresh memory 4 by a DMA means.
