In a seven-segment illuminated display device (A) having a light source assigned to each display segment and a corresponding coder circuit, the light sources consist of glow lamps (L1, ..., L7) which are connected directly to 220V AC voltage via high-resistance series resistors (Rv). Each glow lamp (L1, ..., L7) is, moreover, directly bridged, in accordance with its function in the alphanumeric display, by one or more parallel-connected low-resistance extinguishing resistors (RL), which are each connected in series to a switch (S0, ...
