Pharmaceutical agents useful as germicides in the treatment of infected tissue, the pharmaceutical agent comprising from about 1 to 100 weight percent of an aqueous acidic composition having a pH value of less than 1 and from 0 to about 99 weight percent of a carrier vehicle. The aqueous acidic compositions are prepared by mixing from about 45 to about 80 weight percent hydrochloric acid with from about 20 to about 55 weight percent phosphoric acid for a period of time effective to produce a substantially homogeneous acidic mixture; admixing the acidic mixture with an effective amount of water to produce an aqueous acidic mixture containing at least about 70 weight percent water: and admixing an effective minor amount of a hydroxy carboxylic acid into the aqueous acidic mixture.
