A method for cleaning an ink jet recording head is described, in which, in dependence on the covering operation of the front of the recording head and the movement of a slide, a flexible blade is moved forwards and backwards and the front of the recording head is wiped by the blade in dependence on the movement of the slide. Furthermore, an ink jet recording apparatus is described, which has a recording head mounted on a slide, a covering device for covering the front of the recording head, and a blade for cleaning the front of the recording head, and which is distinguished by the fact that a blade-moving device is provided for moving the blade forwards and backwards in the direction towards the recording head corresponding to the movement of the covering device and to the slide movement.
