PURPOSE:To obtain simply and safely a compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing agricultural chemicals and drugs, by reacting a phenol with perchloromercaptan, a sulfite and conc. sulfurnic acid in an organic solvent and adding a dehydrohalogenating agent to the reaction solution. CONSTITUTION:A phenol (e.g., tert-butylphenol) is reacted with perchloro methylmercaptan, a sulfite (e.g., sodium hydrogensulfide), and conc. sulfuric acid in an organic solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, etc. in the presence of a small amount of an alkali metal iodide at -10 deg.C - room temperature. Then a dehydrohalogenating agent (e.g., aqueous solution of NaOH) is added to the reaction solution, to give the aimed substance. The reaction is carried out by using >= equimolar amounts based on the phenol or perchloromethylmercaptan and the sulfite and >=1/10mol based on perchloromethylmercaptan of conc. sulfuric acid.
