PURPOSE:To compute the inclination angle of the video track and to discriminate the quality of reference tape by recording simultaneously a marker which is a tape speed information at recording on a video track together with a reference signal. CONSTITUTION:At least the reference signal Sr, the pilot signal Sp and the marker Sm are recorded on the reference tape 1. This tape 1 is developed to permit visual inspection of the recording pattern. The distance (i) along the longitudinal direction of the tape is actually measured at points X1, X2,... at the time of signal recording is calculated. If this tape speed is calculated, the angle of inclination theta of the video track 2 recorded on the tape is found so that it can be decided whether the angle of inclination theta is within a standard range. If it is not within the standard range, the tape is not used as the reference tape.
