PURPOSE:To detect the direction of a master device and a reference direction with a slave device by receiving a directional pulse signal, which the master device outputs in a prescribed direction at intervals of a prescribed time, and pulses of wide directional pattern, which are outputted when said pulse signal is turned to the north, to calculate and determine the direction. CONSTITUTION:The directional infrared optical pulses having a wavelength lambda1 which the master device outputs in prescribed directions different from one another by 1 deg. at intervals of 1/(360) seconds and omnidirectional infrared optical pulses of wide directional pattern having a wavelength lambda2 which the master device outputs when said pulses are turned to the north are received by a detector 21 of the slave device. A counter 26 counts clocks during the period from the reception of pulses having the wavelength lambda2 to that having the wavelength lambda1 through filters 22 and 23, pulse shaping circuits 24 and 25. etc. corresponding to wavelengths lambda1 and lambda2 respectively, and the direction of the master device viewed from the slave device on a basis of the north is outputted from a direction signal output circuit 28. Calculation is performed according as this output is larger than pi or not to calculate the direction based on the north of the master device in a calculating circuit 29.
