Heterocyclic compounds of the formula I <IMAGE> in which R<1> is alkyl or perfluoroalkyl having 1-12 carbon atoms in which, in addition, one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -O-CO-, -CO-O- or -CH=CH-, R<2> is H, F, Cl, Br, I, CN or one of the meanings of R<1>, Z is <IMAGE>, Q<1> is -CH2O-, -CH2S-, -SCH2-, -OCH2- or -CO-O-, Q<2> is -OCH2- or -SCH2-, and A is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene which is unsubstituted or substituted by fluorine, or a single bond, are suitable as components of liquid-crystalline phases.
