In a viscous coupling (10) for locking a differential (1) of a motor vehicle, ramps (11) and cams (12) form a device (23) which, upon relative rotation between a case (2) and a disc carrier (3), displaces a cap (8) axially and hence reduces a maximum volume of a chamber (9) to a minimum volume. At low speeds of relative rotation, the chamber (9) has its maximum volume, the chamber (9) is filled to only about 60% with a highly viscous fluid, the viscous coupling (10) has a low torque and the differential (1) has almost free rotational speed compensation. At only a slightly higher relative rotational speed, the chamber (9) has its minimum volume, the chamber (9) is filled to about 90% by the highly viscous fluid, the viscous coupling (10) has a very large torque and the differential (1) is locked in an effective manner. A steep torque rise takes place within a narrow range of relative rotational speeds just above the maximum relative rotational speed which can occur during cornering on a roadway with a good coefficient of friction. <IMAGE>
