NEW MATERIAL:The benzimidazole derivative of formula I (R1 and R2 are H or lower alkyl; at least one of R3 and R4 is halogen, trifluoromethyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkoxycarbonyl or amino and the remainder is H; except for the case that R3 is lower alkoxy and R4 is H). EXAMPLE:2-(2-Dimethylaminobenzylsulfinyl)-4-methylbenzimidazole. USE:It has excellent gastric juice secretion suppressing activity and is useful as an antiulcer agent. It can be administered orally or parenterally. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced according to the reaction formula by (1) reacting the 2-mercaptobenzimidazole compound of formula II with the 2-aminobenzyl compound of formula III in a solvent such as acetone at a temperature between room temperature and the refluxing point and (2) oxidizing the resultant compound of formula IV with an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide in an inert solvent.
