Coloured coatings on glass for decorative purposes are obtd. by (a) prepg. a conc. soln. contg. tetraethyl orthosilicate, water, ethanol, 20-40% salt of transition metal, e.g. Fe, Co, Mn, Cr, Cu, and an acid as catalyst, with silicate to ethanol ratio 3:1; (b) ageing or standing the soln.; (c) dilution with alcohol and addn. of dispersant to adjust the rheology and delay gelling; (d) immersion of glass substrates in the soln.; and (e) extraction and heat treatment.
