PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a water and oil repellent, etc., economically in high yield on an industrial scale, by reacting a specific fluorine-containing alcohol with a (meth)acryl halide in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:A fluorine-containing alkyl ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid can be produced by reacting a fluorinecontaining alcohol of formula I (n is 1-6; m is 1-2n+1) (e.g. 2-fluoroethanol, 2,2-difluoroethanol, etc.) with acryl or methacryl halide of formula II (R is H or methyl; X is Cl or Br) in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. NaOH, KOH, etc.). The process is advantageous because the inexpensive aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide is used as a raw material and the produced hydrogen halide can be treated easily.
