PURPOSE:To produce hydantoin preventing the coloring of the reaction liquid, by reacting glycinonitrile with tert-amine and CO2 in water or in an aqueous solvent, in the presence of a sulfite or bisulfite or under blasting sulfur dioxide gas into the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:Hydantoin is produced by reacting glycinonitrile with a tertamine (e.g. trimethylamine, dimethylaminoethanol, etc.) and carbon dioxide or their mixture in water or in an aqueous solvent (e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc.). The above reaction is carried out under blasting sulfur dioxide gas into the reaction system or in the presence of a sulfite (e.g. potassium bisulfite) to prevent the coloring of the reaction liquid. The amount of the sulfur dioxide gas, sulfite or bisulfite is 0.001-0.3mol, preferably 0.01-0.05mol per 1mol of glycinonitrile.
