The furnace for heating boilers with heating by gas-rich solid fuels such as e.g. wood has, arranged above a fuel grate 5, a combustion chamber 1 which is situated inside a reaction pipe 2 which encloses a heat exchanger 3. Primary air for combustion of the solid fuel components is supplied to the fuel grate 5 by a line 7 and an air distributor 6. For combustion of the volatile components of the fuel, secondary air is introduced by a line 4 into the heat exchanger 3, where it is heated to a temperature, which has at least the ignition temperature necessary for combustion of the volatile components, before it is conducted further into the combustion chamber 1. The burnt smoke gases pass through a waste gas pipe 10 into the chimney.
