Cyclohexane derivatives of the formula I <IMAGE> in which A<1> is 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 1,3-dithiane-2,5-diyl, or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, A<2> is 1,4-phenylene or a single bond, Z is -CH2CH2- or, if A<1> is 1,4-cyclohexylene, is alternatively a covalent bond, R<1> is R, OR, OCR, OCOR, COOR, CN, F, Cl or Br, X is OR, OCR, OCOR, COOR, CN, F, Cl or Br, and R is an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, with the proviso that A<1> is 1,3-dithiane-2,5-diyl or 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl if A<2> is a single bond and <IMAGE> can be used as components of liquid-crystalline phases.A
