The invention relates to a process for covering a steel pipe with polyethylene in which, after the surface of the steel pipe has been cleaned, at least one layer of epoxy resin as a primer and, over this, before the epoxy resin is cured, at least one adhesive layer of ethylene copolymer is applied on to the steel pipe. In order to improve a process for covering the steel pipe of this generic type in such a way that the covered steel pipes have increased resistance under the effect of moisture with simultaneously increased temperature (for example of up to +80 DEG C) and increased resistance against underrusting, it is proposed that the surface of the steel pipe is chromated, completely dried and then the epoxy resin is applied at a pipe temperature of at least 200 DEG C.
