PURPOSE:To reduce the input load by displaying a list of elements of syntax in steps from the syntax rule of the highest stage of a programming language and attaining the selection of the input elements of syntax and the direct key input of a program text. CONSTITUTION:An input method deciding device 6 decides the selection from a list of elements of syntax or the direct input of a program text according to the input given from a keyboard 1. If the selection from the list is decided, the value of a register 4 for syntax rule numbers is updated with the number to be supplied next. Then an idle state is set as long as no relevant rule is available. When a direct input method is decided, the value of the register 4 is set at '0'. Then the program text is analyzed by a syntax analyzer 8, and a syntax analysis tree 5 is produced by a syntax analysis tree producer 9. Then a source program is produced by a source program restoring device 10 and displayed on a display 2. This can simplify an input operation for both the beginner and experienced operations.
