PURPOSE:To detect surface projections of a product running at a high speed efficiently and accurately by mechanically enlarging the displacement of a detecting roll by turning of a detecting lever and detecting it by a displacement detecting mechanism. CONSTITUTION:A main body 1 is energized by an energizing mechanism 10 to follow the surface of a running metal strip A. When the projection B exists on the surface of the strip A, a guide roll 2 first rides over the projection B. Then a roll 4 rides over the projection B at which time the roll 4 is moved a distance corresponding to the height of the projection B. Since the main body 1 follows the surface of the strip A, displacement of the roll 4 is correctly matched to the height of the projection B so that the influence of surface fluctuations of the strip A is eliminated. The displacement of the roll 4 is also enlarged by the detecting lever 3 and detected by the moving quantity detector 7 so that the height of the projection B is detected accurately.
