A cavity transfer mixer (3) is provided between a screw extruder (1) which melts the foamable thermoplastics material, and a cooler (2). The cavity transfer mixer (3) enables the formation of a uniform and well mixed mixture of a thermoplastics material, a foaming agent and optionally, or other desired additives. The cavity transfer mixer (3) includes a rotor (31) having cavities (36) thereon which is rotatable in a stator (30) having cavities (35) therein. The cavities (36) are arranged to overlap with the cavities (35) during rotation of the rotor (31) to cause transfer of the thermoplastics material/foaming agent mixture between the cavities (35, 36) during passage through the mixer (3). <IMAGE> |
