NEW MATERIAL:The 5-hydroxy-5-trifluoromethylimidazolidine-2,4-dione of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H or alkyl) or its alkyl derivative. USE:Antiviral agent, antitumor agent, herbicide or their intermediate. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the hydrated trifluoropyruvic acid of formula II with urea or mono or dialkylurea of formula III in a polar solvent (e.g. a protonic polar solvent such as alcohol, or an aprotic polar solvent such as dimethylformamide) or an inert hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. benzene) at about 20-200 deg.C, preferably about 50-120 deg.C. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a general acidic catalyst when the compound of formula III is an alkylurea, and in the absence of catalyst when it is urea.
