PURPOSE:To read an original at most appropriate sliced level for each by reading the original, in which sentences and photographs are mixed, with each reading level simultaneously, slicing and merging each read out result, after reading out, to each corresponding place. CONSTITUTION:An original 1 is read by an optical system and a sensor 5 and is converted to a digital electric signal through a pre-amplifier 6 and shading tracking circuit 7. Thus obtained electric signal is converted simultaneously to two binary data which represent brightness, a fixed slice and a dither slice, by a normal slice binalization circuit 8 and a dither slice binarization circuit 9. The two binary data are transferred to each memory 18 and 19 of each control unit through an adapter part 11 and the slice editing of two picture data is executed by an image processor 21 where a picture information is made on a memory 20 using a dither method for the photograph part of the original and a normal slice for the character part of it. Thus, a mixed picture information is read without declining a picture quality.
