Podophyllotoxin, and derivatives thereof, of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is H or OH, and R2 is H or CH3, are prepared, in highly pure form, by plant parts from Podophyllum species being extracted with ethyl acetate and the extract being concentrated and filtered through silica gel and then being chromatographed on acidic aluminium oxide, after which the main fraction is chromatographed on silica gel and the desired product is subsequently recrystallised. The compounds are used for producing pharmaceutical preparations for treating diseases which are caused by inappropriate activity of lymphatic T cells, by cell division in the metaphase, by microorganisms, such as plasmodia or fungi, by viruses and/or by helminths.
