PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for organic synthesis, a modifier for resin, etc., at a low temperature in improved yield, by the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of an unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbon using an oxide of Mo-Bi, etc. as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III is produced by oxidizing an unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbon of formula II (R is phenyl or naphthyl) (e.g. alpha-methylstyrene) in vapor-phase, preferably at a raw material concentration of 0.1-5vol%, steam concentration of 0-50vol% and air concentration of 50-99.9vol%, at a space velocity of 500-5,000hr<-1> and a reaction temperature of 300-500 deg.C, using an oxide catalyst of formula I [p, q, r and e represent the atomic ratios of respective elements; p=0-12, q=0-12 (p+q=12), r=0.1-20, and e is defined by the atomic valences and atomic ratios of the elements]. |
