PURPOSE:To provide a copolymer useful as a sealing material of various kind of oils, swelling properly with water, etc., and resistant to oil, by compounding a conjugated diene and an alpha,beta-unsaturated nitrile monomer with a specific amount of a specific vinyl compound containing hydrophilic group, and carrying out the copolymerization of the monomers. CONSTITUTION:The objective copolymer composed of (A) 30-93(mol)% conjugat ed diene monomer, (B) 5-54% alpha,beta-unsaturated nitrile monomer and (C) 2-16% vinyl compound of formula (R<1> is H or CH3; R<2> is 1-3C alkyl; n is 2-8) (e.g. acrylic acid ethyl carbitol), and having an intrinsic viscosity [eta] of 1.0-4.0dl/g (in THF at 30 deg.C) can be produced by copolymerizing the components A, B and C in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, usually in a solvent, at 0-50 deg.C. |
