When smelting silicon from a charge (7) containing silicon compounds and carbon in an arc furnace, the molten silicon (8) is tapped through a tapping pipe (10). In order to avoid contact of the silicon to be tapped with the cooler furnace wall and with the charge, the tapping pipe (10) ends underneath the electrodes (3, 4, 5), preferably in the centre of the bottom (9) in the trough (1) of the furnace. <IMAGE>
