PURPOSE:To shorten a picture processing time by reducing the size of an original picture to give the necessary processing to this reduced picture and then enlarging the size of said processed picture up to the size of the original picture. CONSTITUTION:In a picture processing mode the data on an original picture 1 is read out of a magnetic disk 5 under the control of a CPU 8. Then the picture elements of the picture data are thinned in a proper ratio or an interpo lating operation is performed for reduction the picture size. Thus a reduced picture 11 is obtained. The data on this picture 11 is processed by a high-speed arithmetic circuit 6 for acquisition of a reduced picture 13. The data on the picture 13 is extracted from the disk 5 and the picture 13 is enlarged by the CPU 8 up to the same size of the picture 1. Then the feature quantity is extracted out of the picture 1 to obtain a desired processed picture 3. Then the picture 3 is displayed on a display 7. In such a way, the arithmetic proces sing time for acquisition of the picture 3 is shortened.
