PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate, etc. for medicines and agriculturel chemicals in high yield, by treating a compound such as 2,4,6-trimethoxy-4-methyl-2,5-cyclohexadienone, etc. in the presence of an acidic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I [X is C=O or C(OR1)(OR2)(R1 and R2 are 1-4C alkyl)] is treated with in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as a protonicacid, e.g. sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid or perhalogenic acid, or Lewis acid, e.g. aluminum chloride, zinc chloride or ferric chloride, preferably in a solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, chloroform, benzene, toluene, ethyl ether or n-hexane, at 0-100 deg.C to give a cyclohexadiene derivative expressed by formula II, e.g. 2,6-dimethoxy-4- methylidene-2,5-cyclohexadienone.
