PURPOSE:To neutralize and remove the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal from coal, to suppress the deposition of scale and precipitate in a hydrogenation column, and to stabilize the operation of coal liquefaction process, by extracting the acidic component of a solvent recovered from a hydrogenation apparatus with water, and adding the extraction water to the coal. CONSTITUTION:Coal is crushed with the crusher A, mixed with a slurrying solvent and supplied to the hydrogenation apparatus D. The slurrying solvent recovered from the hydrogenation apparatus is made to contact with water in the acidic component extractor E to extract the acidic component in the recovered solvent such as phenols, acetic acid, etc. to the water phase, which is separated from the oil phase in the oil-water separator F to obtain extraction water. The extraction water is introduced into the crusher A to effect the neutralization of the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal existing in the coal and the dissolution of the metal to the water phase.
