A chocolate drink composition in the form of dry, free-flowing granules readily dispersible in hot or cold water or milk, is prepared by coating sugar particles with an edible vegetable fat which is in the liquid state, and subsequently enrobing the fat coated sugar particles with a coating powder comprising finely-divided dry cocoa. According to a preferred procedure, the sugar particles are agglomerated, but mixing them with water or invert sugar syrup, before being coated with the fat, the fat, exemplfied by molten cocoa butter, groundnut oil, soya-bean oil or sunflower oil and containing a minor proportion of lecithin but not more than 5% of lower fatty acids, amounts to between 5% and 8% by weight of the sugar, and the coating powder comprises solubilized cocoa powder containing 15%-20% of cocoa butter, and finely divided whole or skimmed milk solids. The weight and ration of sugar to cocoa powder is roughly 2:1, are effected in an inclined pan granulator and the finished granules are heated at about 45‹C thereby to deepen their colour.
