PURPOSE:To decide an optimum reading condition by applying threshold value processing to picture information obtained by advanced reading to detect a background part in an irradiated field, and deciding the read condition at this reading based on the picture information of the advanced read in the irradiated field comprising the background part and an object part surrounded by the background part to eliminate inconvenience in narrowered irradiated field. CONSTITUTION:Whether or not logical 1 exists from mid points Ca-Cd of sheet sides 7a-7d toward the other sides, that is, from the midpoint of each side toward directions of 45 deg., 90 deg. and 135 deg. is retrieved and it is discriminated that the object part 10 exists on the side 7a where logical 1 exists in all the three directions. When the object part 10 is recognized in this way, binary picture information d(x,y)=0 in the object part 10 is all converted into d(x,y)=1. In multiplying the advanced read picture information at each picture element with corrected binary-coding picture information, the range of logical 0 in the corrected binary-coding picture information is 0 and the range of the background part and the object part being logical 1 remains the same as the original advanced read picture information, new corrected advanced read picture information f'(x,y) are obtained.
