NEW MATERIAL:A pyridine derivative of formula I is (R is 3-pyridyl, 4-pyridyl; R1 is 1-12C alkyl, lower alkenyl, 5C,6C-cycloalkyl, pyridyl, pydilmethyl, phenethyl, methyl, methoxy, nitro, phenyl, benzyl). EXAMPLE:N-(1-sec-Butylthio-2,2,2-trichloroethyl)nicotinamide. USE:It is used as a bactericidal agent for agricultural and horticultural purposes. It shows excellent effect against bacterial leaf blight in rice plant without chemical injury to rice plant, further to a canker in citrus trees and bacterial soft rot in Chinese cabbages. PREPARATION:For example, nicotinamide of formula II is allowed to react with chloral, preferably in an inert solvent at 30-150 deg.C and the product of formula III is halogenated and then, allowed to react with a compound of formula IV to give the objective compound of formula I.
