PURPOSE:To always obtain a video signal having a good picture quality irrespective of an incident light quantity, an exposure time, and whether the contrast is large or small, by controlling a reverse bias potential of a gate of an electrostatic induction transistor based on an output of a picture element signal, and controlling its photoelectric conversion characteristic. CONSTITUTION:An image pickup element group 61 is constituted by arraying a picture element consisting of an electrostatic induction transistor of a normally on-type, in a matrix shape of (m)X(n) pieces, these picture elements are connected to (m) pieces of line lines and (n) pieces of row lines, and also a necessary voltage is applied by a video power source 62. To the line line, a vertical scanning signal is applied from a vertical scanning circuit 63, and to a row selecting transistor group 64 corresponding to the row line, a horizontal scanning signal is applied from a horizontal scanning circuit 65. Also, the row line is grounded through a reset transistor group 69, and its transistor group 69 is constituted so as to be controlled by a reset controlling circuit 70. A detecting part 71 detects an output level of a picture element signal, and controls a read-out level and a reset level of a vertical scanning signal applied to the line line from the vertical scanning circuit 63 through a controlling circuit 72 based on said output.
