PURPOSE:To permit the use of unpure water for washing in the stage of regeneration by passing an electrodeposition paint through the inside of mixed anion and cation exchange resins to refine the paint and separating both ion exchange resins to regenerate the resins then mixing again the resins. CONSTITUTION:The anion exchange resin and cation exchange resin are mixed and are put into a column. The electrodeposition paint is padded through such column and is thereby refined. The exchange of both ions progresses simultaneously in this stage and therefore the paint is acidic and does not gel. The paint in the column is replaced with water in a regeneration stage. The unpure water such as city water is used. The resins are developed by back washing and are so separated by a difference in specific gravity that the anion exchange resin is separated in the upper part and the cation exchange resin is positioned in the lower part. A dilute hydrochloric acid soln. is injected from the lower part to regenerate the cation exchange resin and an aq. caustic soda soln. is injected from the upper part to regenerate the anion exchange resin. Compressed air is injected into the column after washing to mix thoroughly both ion exchange resins. The mixed resins are again transferred to the refining stage for the electrodeposition paint.
