PROCESS FOR STORING ROAST COFFEE POWDER AND BEANS

A CO2 and O2 absorbent for packed roast coffee comprises (a) Fe powder (b) an electrolyte (c) granular Ca(OH)2 coated with separatory particles. Thus, 100 pts. Ca(OH)2 (diameter 0.7 mm) impregnated with 32 pts. water was mixed with 25 pts. gypsum powder to form an alkaline, granular substance coated with separatory particles. A mixt. of granular substance 3, Fe powder 2, and NaCl 1g was packed in a paper bag laminated with a porous polyethylene film (ventilation degree; 100 cc/30.000 sec). This was placed in a bag of 500g roasted coffee, and the bag was hermetically sealed and stored at 25≦̸C for 45 days. The O2 and CO2 concn. of packed coffee (0.00% and 0.23%) was much smaller than that of the control coffee (4.2% and 75.28%) stored without the absorbent.
