PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an anti-allergic agent and its intermediate, in short steps, with simple operation, by using a compound such as 11-methoxy-2-methyl-6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]oxepine, etc. as a starting substance and oxidizing the substance with an oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II (R5 is CHO or CO2H) [e.g. 11-methoxy-6,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,e]oxepine-2-carbaldehyde] is produced by oxidizing the compound of formula I [R<1> and R<2> together form =O, or R<1> is H and R<2> is OR<4> (R<4> is alkyl); R<3> is H or halogen] with an oxidizing agent. When a proper oxidizing agent such as ammonium ceric nitrate is used as the above oxidizing agent, the product is oxidized through the compound of formula III to the compound of formula IV, which is oxidized further with e.g. chromium (VI) oxide-acetic acid to obtain the compound of formula V. The compound of formula VI can be produced by oxidizing the compound of formula II with potassium peroxodisulfate and copper sulfate.
