PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a germicide, drug, etc. by a simple operation in high yield industrially advantageously, by reacting a phenol with sulfur chloride in a polar solvent by the use of a nitrogen-containing organic compound as a sulfur. CONSTITUTION:A phenol shown by the formula I or formula II (R1-R4 are H, halogen, or 1-4C alkyl) is reacted with sulfur chloride in a polar solvent (e.g., diethyl ether, dioxane, dimethoxyethane, etc.) to give a polythiobisphenol shown by the formula III (n is 2, or 3) or formula IV. In the operation, a nitrogen-containing organic compound (e.g., tertiary amine, quaternary ammonium salt, alkylated acid amide, or aromatic heterocyclic compound). To be concrete, triethylamine, trimethylamine, etc., may be cited as the nitrogen- containing organic compound. |
