PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of the injury and breakdown of a photosensitive layer having a photoconductive surface layer of high dark resistance on the surface layer by charging electrostatically said photosensitive layer by a contact electrostatic charger having a contactor of high resistance. CONSTITUTION:The contactor 8 of 10<7>-10<10>OMEGA.cm volume resistance provided on the outside periphery of a support material 7 is provided to the contact electrostatic charger 9. A thin film insulating layer 2 having >=10<12>OMEGA.cm volume resistance and the photosensitive surface layer 4 having >=10<10>OMEGA.cm dark resistance are successively laminated on a conductive base material 1 to provide a photosensitive body formed with 3 layers of the photosensitive layers. The electrostatic charger 9 is provided in parallel with such body 6 and the contactor 8 thereof is brought into contact with the semiconductor layer 4. The material 7 of the charger 9 and the material 1 of the body 6 are connected to a constant voltage power source 10. Electric charge flows into the surface of the layer 5 from the contactor 8 and said surface is electrostatically charged when a voltage is impressed by the power source 10 to the material 7 of the charger 9 while the body 6 is rotated in an arrow (a) direction. The injury and breakdown of the photosensitive layer are thus prevented.
