NEW MATERIAL:The dihydrocarissone of formula. USE:An agent for improving the tobacco flavor. It has woody scent, harmonizes well to the original flavor of tobacco, gives mildness to the flavor, stresses the taste of tobacco, suppresses the irritation, and keeps the effects for a long period. It is added to cut tobacco and various other materials for the production of cigarette such as the rolling paper, paste, filter, etc., to improve the taste of tobacco. PREPARATION:The leaf of a growing Nicotiana undulata is inoculated with plant virus, collected after a definite period, extracted with an organic solvent, and subjected to steam-distillation. The distillate is fractionated by a silicate column using a hexane-ehter system, and the fraction eluted at hexane:ether ratio of 50:50 (volume ratio) is subjected to the fractionation gas chromatography to separate the compound of formula.
