Acid insoluble or sparingly soluble radioactive corrosive prods. (I) coating the walls of prim. heating systems in reactors are removed by contacting the contaminated surface with an aq. soln. contg. an oxidising agent (II) of pH below 7. (II) contains a permanganate, esp. KMnO4, chromic acid and O3 and causes oxidn. of prods. (I) to acid soluble oxidn. prods. which are removed from the surface by dissolving in an acidic decontaminating soln. (III).
