A solid dibutyl tin difluoride cpd. (DBTF) is prepd. by reacting cpds. free from alkali(ne earth) metal cpds., namely a Sn halide, pref. dibutyl tin dichloride and an ammonium fluoride, pref. NH4 bifluoride. - Pref. the Sn halide in soln. is contacted in an alcohol with the NH4 fluoride dissolved in water and the ppte. is recovered, washed with water and then with a solvent such as acetone, which can trap the water. The reaction prod. of the Sn halide and the NH4 fluoride is purified by at least one recrystallisation in an alcohol, pref. MeOH, this being effected pref. with addition of a fine powder of particle size 7-20, pref. 15 microns, the powder being pref. Aerosil R 972 (RTM) for silica).
