PURPOSE:To enhance the chipping resistance, corrosion-proofness and physical properties of a paint film, by interposing a corrsion-proof pigment-containing barrier coat having a specific composition and properties between the cation electrodeposition paint film and top coat film on a steel plate. CONSTITUTION:In painting a steel plate constituting a car body, a cationic electrodeposition paint is at first applied so that the water absorbancy of an electrodeposition paint film is 0.3-20wt.%. Next, a barrier coat, which is based on a modified polyolefinic resin of which the static glass transition temp. of the formed film thereof is -30--60 deg.C and corrosion-proof pigment such as lead pigment or chromate pigment, is applied to the coated surface. Then a liquid top coat, which is prepared by dissolving or dispersing vehicle such as an amino/acrylic resin oramino/alkyd resin type one being a main component in water or anorg. solvent, is applied to the barrier coat surface to form a desired paint film.
