PURPOSE:To transfer efficiently a document data by switching block transfer transmitting a data stored in a document base file as it is and linearize transfer transmitting data while the format is converted into the logical structure of a document depending on a transfer destination. CONSTITUTION:A work station WS, a file station FS and a print station PS are connected to a common network NET to constitute a document data trans fer system. In retransmitting a data stored in a document base file 9 from the station FS to the station WS, the storage data of the file 9 is subjected to block transfer as it is under the control of a memory controller 8. Further, in transferring the data to a station PS, the storage data of the document base file 2 of the station WS is subjected to format conversion into the logical struc ture of the document under the control of the controller 8 and then read to transfer the document data efficiently.
