The path search is carried out essentially according to the free destination search method. However, in order to reduce the free destination search and thereby the load in the network, when a connection request is received from a subscriber (TNA), it is first established in the originating nodal switching centre (KVS1), with reference to a list containing corresponding information, whether the required subscriber (TNB) is connected to an adjacent node (KVS2, KVS3 or KVS4). If so, and if a free connection path is found thereto, the connection request is forwarded to the node concerned. If not, however, a free destination search is instigated by the originating node (KVS1). The resulting acknowledgement, if it passes via one connection section only, i.e. if it is generated by an adjacent node, is used to update the aforementioned list in the originating node (KVS1) in that the information relating to the accessibility of the called subscriber station is recorded in the first place in the list. <IMAGE>
