In the case of an exhaust gas catalyst, in particular for conversion exhaust gases from motor vehicle internal combustion engines, with a housing (1) and a catalyst core (2) which is arranged in the housing (1) and through which the exhaust gases flow, wherein the catalyst core (2) consists of a support having a very large surface area and a coating, applied to the surface of the support, consisting of a catalyst material, in particular a coated catalyst material, detachment of the coating from the support is made more difficult or prevented, with a simple structure and easy manufacture, by forming the support of the catalyst core (2) from thin plate-shaped parts (3) with large-pored rough surfaces of anodically oxidised aluminium with large-pored rough surfaces or open-pored sintered glass (6). The plate-shaped parts (3) are preferably made as metal sheets, in particular as anodically oxidized aluminium sheets, and are stacked one above the other to give a stack, flow channels (5) for the exhaust gases being formed between the plate-shaped parts (3). In this case, the catalyst core (2) is expediently designed as a heat exchanger and, if necessary, can take a flow of a cooling coolant stream, preferably a cooling air stream. <IMAGE>
